Fees

  • Application Fee: $125.
  • Kentucky Jurisprudence Nursing Exam: $15.00 (Payable to NCSBN)
  • Additional $40.00 fee if requesting paper application.

Highlights:

  • Applications for the state of Kentucky should be submitted online. Paper applications must be specifically requested and paid for with a separate fee.
  • Fingerprints and criminal background checks are mandatory.
  • All applicants must pass a Kentucky Jurisprudence Nursing Exam.
  • ALL convictions EVER received (other than some traffic violations) must be reported on the application.
  • Submitting the application for licensure by examination does NOT register you for the NCLEX. Applicants must register and pay separately for the exam by going to: www.pearsonvue.com.

As part of the application process, you must:

  • Register with Pearson Vue to take the NCLEX exam. You must do this before sending in the licensure application.
  • Request a criminal background check. This may be done online by following the instructions found here: Background Check
  • Take the Kentucky Jurisprudence examination. Information on the examination is found here: Jurisprudence Exam

Fingerprinting Process

An FD-258 fingerprint card with the ORI number KY920170Z is used for fingerprinting. The ORI number is the number assigned to the Kentucky Board of Nursing. It lets the fingerprint processing center know where to send results.

Fingerprints may be taken at a law enforcement agency or at a UPS center.
When the card is completed, it should be sent to the Kentucky State Police along with the $16.50 fee. DO NOT send it to the Board of Nursing.

Licensing Process

Once the application, fee, fingerprint and criminal background check results, and supporting documents have been reviewed, the Board will determine if you are eligible to test.

If you are eligible to take the NCLEX, you will receive an authorization to test (ATT) and instructions on scheduling the test.

When passing NCLEX results are received by the board, a license will be issued.

License cards are NOT sent out. Applicants will receive an email containing their license number and expiration date.

About Temporary Permits
Graduates may receive a provisional license allowing them to practice while NCLEX results are pending.

To obtain a provisional license all the application for licensure requirements must be received.

The permit is valid for 6 months and is non-renewable.
